Chapter Eleven

DARBY

It’s been a wild ride here in the States. I’ve been here for almost a week, and as much as I loved it when I first got here, I’m ready to get back to London. The smog, the rude people, the clutter, just a few things about this country that I don’t miss in my new home. It’s even more evident as I go to meet up with Truman. My flight home leaves from New York in a few days. I had to come spend some time with my big brother before I went back home.

I told him that I was going to stop by before I left, but he didn’t know when I was due to show up. I figure maybe I can catch him doing something that I can tease him about. The man is notoriously sneaky as fuck. He’s always doing things that none of us figure out about until it’s either over or we can’t stop it. I wonder every so often if he’s not in some sort of spy program. I wouldn’t doubt it.

Before I go to visit my brother, I have one stop I need to make first. I’m not looking forward to going, not that I don’t want to, but I know when I leave there, I’m not going to be in the best mood.

My father’s ashes are in a mausoleum. It’s been a while since I’ve been here to visit the old man. I know he’s gone, but there are days that I don’t want to believe it. I miss him so much that it hurts deep into my organs when I think about him.

Around three, I walk into the mausoleum and walk to the spot I know his ashes are.

“Hey, Dad. How’s your rest? Hope you’re okay,” I start out when I see his name on the plaque. Instantly my heart clenches, and I feel my eyes starting to water. “I thought I’d drop in to see what you thought about the craziness that’s going on in my life.” I stop and think about my life and the changes over the past few weeks. “You know what, that’s not true. My life hasn’t been crazy. It’s been, new . . . and exciting, but I’m loving it. Did you see that the club has become so successful I’m going to start hiring more workers? I just can’t keep up. It’s a wonderful problem to have. I can’t thank you enough for teaching me to be so accepting of everyone, no matter their preferences. I judge on character and character alone, and it’s allowed me to meet some great people.” I nod and continue talking to him the same way I did when he was alive.

“Oh, and Charlotte. I know she’s upset about what happened at her old job, but she’s really flourishing in the club. I knew she’d like it there, but I didn’t want to push her, you know? I wanted her to figure it out on her own.
